One of the questions I was never able to answer about my dog Misha was perhaps the most important, even the most interesting one. This was the question of Misha's navigational skills. He had been travelling the streets of Cambridge* long before I thought to go with him, and had probably memorized some landmarks.* (1)But sometimes he seemed to travel without the aid of landmarks, or at least not with the landmarks he had used to get to where he was going, since once he had arrived at his destination, he might easily take a different route home. Did he use the stars or the position of the sun? Did he, like a carrier pigeon, hear the infrasound* made by the Atlantic Ocean, so that he always knew which way was east? I didn't know, and to investigate more deeply would have required an experiment - blindfolding* him, for example. But that was not the nature of our relationship.
I did learn two things, though, about Misha's navigational ability. The first was that his skills were not genetic, or not entirely so. (2)If they had been, then other huskies* should have shared them. But I knew other Siberian huskies who could not navigate, one of whom was Misha's wife, Maria. When they were together, Misha decided the route for both of them. (3)That was not easy, because she, young and enthusiastic, would go running ahead of him, often in the wrong direction, requiring him to overtake her. Then, by jumping at her, he would have to knock her in the shoulder to try to make her turn. If after all his efforts she still wouldn't go where he wanted, he would resign himself to following her.
Many another dog would have obeyed her leader, but Maria had been a little spoiled by Misha, who let her do whatever she wanted, even when he knew that what she wanted was wrong. (4)That was delightful for Maria, but as a result she never learned to find her own way.

 Cambridge:
 landmark(s): 目印

(1)
But sometimes he seemed to travel without the aid of landmarks, or at least not with the landmarks he had used to get to where he was going, since once he had arrived at his destination, he might easily take a different route home.

with the aid of landmarks と not with the landmarks...

landmarks (he had used <to get to [where he was going]>)
where = the place where

since以下は、once...

(2)
I did learn two things, though, about Misha's navigational ability. The first was that his skills were not genetic, or not entirely so. If they had been, then other huskies* should have shared them.

前文の複数形を探すと、they = his skills となり、his skills = Misha's navigational ability である。
また、前文のbe動詞+〜 を探すと、were not genetic だから、beenの後にgeneticを補って考えればよい。

(3)
But I knew other Siberian huskies who could not navigate, one of whom was Misha's wife, Maria. When they were together, Misha decided the route for both of them. That was not easy, because she, young and enthusiastic, would go running ahead of him, often in the wrong direction, requiring him to overtake her. Then, by jumping at her, he would have to knock her in the shoulder to try to make her turn. If after all his efforts she still wouldn't go where he wanted, he would resign himself to following her.

requring him to overtake her
