次の英文を読み,設問に答えなさい。 The news arrived as an unexpected email. “Sir,” it began. “First, let me apologize for bothering you, but I saw an article you wrote and had to write.” The writer ― let’s call him Nick ― went on to describe how his grandfather, who had never gone to school, could learn languages with such remarkable ease that by the end of his life he could speak 70 of them, and read and write in 56. The recipient of the email was a professor of language at University College London. Nick had come across a 1996 posting on a website by the professor asking who held the world record for the number of languages they were able to speak. According to Nick, his grandfather was 20 when he moved to New
York in the 1910s. There he found a job as a railroad porter which brought
him into contact with travelers speaking many different languages.

grandfather on a six-month world cruise. Whatever port they visited, Nick
said his grandfather knew the local language. Assuming the grandfather
spoke the local language at each port he had to know at least 15. Even
more amazingly, Nick claimed that this talent ran in his family. His
grandfather once told Nick that his own father and great-uncle could speak
more than 100 languages. When the professor read the note, he immediately
recognized Athe potential significance of Nick’s
claims and posted
them on his mailing list. His posting created the term “hyperpolyglot”,
which he defined as a person who speaks six languages or
more. The idea that there is a genetic component to
“hyperpolyglottism” is supported by evidence that the characteristic might
run in families. Since the 1990s, scientists have linked language deficits
to a genetic component. Therefore, the news about Nick and his family
attracted many of the researchers because it suggested the possibility
that language talent might be
