九州大の英語

「標準的で解きやすい読解問題と、やや難しい英作文問題」が九州大学の特徴である。読解問題が配点の７割を占めるが、受験者にとって読解はできて当たり前であるから、勝負の決め手は英作文になる。  [ 2008　九州大学　解答時間１２０分 ] （時間配分は最後に５分余るように配分している） 　 　配点　 　問題分野　 　問題内容　 　時間配分　 　１ 　42 　読解　 　和訳・内容説明 　２０分 　２ 　50 　読解　 　内容説明など 　２５分 　３ 　48　 　読解　 　和訳・内容説明　  　２５分 　４ 　30　 　英作文 　和文英訳　  　２０分 　５ 　30　 　自由英作文 　１００語程度　  　２５分 読解は、国立二次レベルの英文を数多く読み、どこに下線が引かれても和訳できるくらいまで復習して地力をつけるという正攻法がいちばんである。和文英訳は、「与えられた日本語を英訳しやすい日本語に変換する」いわゆる「和文和訳」が必要となるので、国立大のやや難しい問題を数多く解いて実力をつけたい。自由英作文の対策は、自由英作文の典型的な問題を最低２０題くらいは解くことと、幅広い英文を読み、読んだ英文のポイントを２〜３行の英語で書いておく のが有効である。

読解の典型問題を１問見てみましょう。２００７年の大問３です。（後半は省略しています）  次の英文を読み，設問に答えなさい。     Latin, a classical language, had a bad reputation for generations. It was regarded as dull, difficult and dead. But things have changed in recent years: modern course material focusing on the rich variety of ancient Roman life, film and video, TV dramas, documentaries and the internet have brought the Romans and their language to life. So Latin is no longer dull and, far from being dead, is enjoying a revival. It cannot be made easy, but it is certainly more accessible. Sadly, though, in spite of the renewed interest of the subject, (1)the number of children studying it has decreased, not least because Latin, once so widely required, is now no longer even offered in many schools. When it is available, it has to compete with other subjects, usually modern languages. In my school, that means German, Italian, Spanish, and even Chinese, choices that are inevitably seen as more practical.   However, Latin is beginning again to stand on its own two feet. (2)The pupils who choose it face a real intellectual challenge and are better prepared than ever before to appreciate the language in its broad cultural context. Parents approve, too, and many react enthusiastically, even passionately. As one told me: “I loved Latin and am very sorry I didn’t take it further. My son is so lucky.
