自由英作文の典型として、２００８年の大問５をとりあげます。 　新聞の「人生相談コーナー」に、読者が次のような悩みごとを相談しています。あなたならどのようなアドバイスをしますか。"Helpful Advice" さんに代わって、解答欄に１０行程度の英語で答えなさい。 　 Dear Helpful Advice,      My close friend and classmate will graduate from high school next year.  His parents insist that he should study at university, but he has no interest in going right now.  He wants to take a break for a couple of years and see the world before he goes on to college.  He doesn't know what to do and is asking me for advice.  What should I tell him? ＊解答欄は、幅１８ｃｍということなので、１行１０語と考え、１００語程度で書いてみてください。

過去問解説

賛成意見と反対意見のネタを考えてみます。 （賛成） ・若いうちに広く世界を見ることは今後の人生に大いに役立つだろう。 ・この経験を通じて、やりたいことがきっと見つかるから、それから大学に行けばよい。 （反対） ・海外を広く回るのであれば、外国語の能力が不可欠だ。 ・大学に入り、英語やその他の外国語を身につけてから海外に出たほうが得るものが大きい。 反対意見のほうが書きやすそうです。「確かに〜だが」の譲歩パターンを使って語数を稼ぐこともできますね。    If I were you, I would advise him to go on to college and learn English, and another language such as Spanish, if possible. It is true that you can communicate with people in other countries without knowing their language, but if you can speak their language, you will aquire much more from them.  I suppose your friend can hardly make himself understood in English.  If he were abroad now, he couldn’t get much from the people there. I think he should learn foreign languages for the first two years at college, and then take a break to see the world. （１０１語）
